Catherine Naglestad and John Daszak return to Bayerische Staatsoper in the premiere performances of Franz Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten at the Münchner Opernfestspiele and both singing their role — Carlotta and Alviano — for the first time. In a staging by Krzysztof Warlikowski and conducted by Ingo Metzmacher, the run opens on 1 July, and a revival is planned for May 2018. 

A frequent exponent of the dramatic repertoire, Naglestad has a broad range of roles including Strauss’ Salome, Sieglinde (Die Walküre), Santuzza in Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana, Cassandre (Les Troyens)and Senta (Der fliegende Hollaender). Looking ahead, Catherine returns to both Opernhaus Zürich and Deutsche Oper Berlin as Salome, repeats her highly successful Minnie (La Fanciulla del West) under Marco Armiliato and joins The Dutch National Opera for a staging of Schoenberg’s Gurrelieder.

A familiar face to the audience in Munich, the ever-versatile John Daszak has recently appeared there in Zemlinsky’s Der Zwerg, as the Witch in Humperdinck’s Hänsel und Gretel and, most recently, as Robert Falcon Scott in Srnka’s South Pole. Elsewhere, John has continued to add new realms to his already extensive repertoire to include Pier Francesco Orsini in Ginastera’s Bomarzo at Teatro Real Madrid under David Afkham, and Albrecht von Brandenburg in Hindemith’s Mathis der Malerat Semperoper Dresden under Simone Young. Next season he will sing his first Herod (Salome) at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden.
