Versatile British tenor John Daszak makes a role debut this week as Herod in David McVicar’s production of Salome at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Conducted by Henrik Nánási, performances open on 8 January.

Internationally recognised for a rare dramatic intensity, Daszak has left an indelible mark on many of the world’s greatest opera houses with his incisive performances, including most recently as Alviano in Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten at Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper under Ingo Metzmacher, as Ginastera’s Bomarzo at Madrid’s Teatro Real under Alejo Perez, as Sergei in Shostakovich’s Katerina Izmailova at Moscow’s historic Bolshoi Theatre under Tughan Sokhiev, and as Berg’s Tambour’major in Wozzeck at the 2017 Salzburger Festspiele, conducted by Vladimir Jurowski.

Looking to the year ahead, John returns to Covent Garden in Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk under Sir Antonio Pappano, reunites with Zubin Mehta at Maggio Musicale Firenze for Dallapiccola’s Il prigioniero, revisits the Bolshoi Theatre as Britten’s Captain Vere (Billy Budd) and appears again at the Salzburger Festpiele, this time in Salomeunder Franz Welser-Möst.
