Pianist Angela Hewitt and conductor Sir Neville Marriner have been named as two of the ten new members of Gramophone magazine’s Hall of Fame, as voted by the magazine’s readers.
The Gramophone Hall of Fame, which is added to annually, celebrates those performers, producers, engineers and label executives whose contributions to classical music recording have proved the most influential and inspiring. Angela and Sir Neville join a prestigious line up of international artists, including Pierre Boulez, Plácido Domingo, Mitsuko Uchida and Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Known for her diverse repertoire and recordings, from Bach and Mozart to Liszt and Schumann, Angela’s next recording — Beethoven Sonatas Volume 5 on Hyperion — is due for release in July. Other highlights for Angela this summer include a recital at the Edinburgh International Festival and a mini-residency at the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe in London.
Presented with the Gramophone Award for Outstanding Achievement last year, Sir Neville’s discography — particularly his work with the Academy of St Martin in the Fields — is internationally acclaimed. This summer he returns to the Boston Symphony Orchestra at Tanglewood, conducting them in a programme of Mozart’s Symphonies Nos.35 and 36, and Schumann’s Piano Concerto with Paul Lewis as soloist.
Further ahead, both artists will work together in spring 2016 when Angela joins the Academy of St Martin in the Fields and Sir Neville on a tour of Asia where they will perform in Taipai, Macau and Shanghai.
