November's New Album Releases 2023

Deemed the perfect soundtrack for the 2024 Olympic Games, November brought the release of Gautier Capuçon​’s concept album Destination Paris on Warner Classics.

The album incorporates popular film melodies and French chansons to classical pieces including La Foule by Édith Piaf, the main theme from Summer of ​’42 by Michel Legrand, Beau soir by Debussy, Sicilienne by Fauré, and Chi Mai by Ennio Morricone. The album was recorded with pianist Jérôme Ducros, Maîtrise de Radio France, and Orchestre de chambre de Paris under conductor Lionel Bringuier,

Sean Shibe’s Profesión sees the guitarist return to the classical guitar, bringing together works by Agustín Barrios, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Alberto Ginastera. This will be Shibe’s first-ever album focusing on repertoire that was originally written for the classical guitar, and he plays a Hauser copy built for Julian Bream. It was considered one of the best instruments of the 1930s, and fits the sound world of this programme like a glove.

The album derives its name from Barrios’s​​“Profesión de Fe” (profession of faith), a poem which he often used as a preface to his concerts. The poem references indigenous mythological deities, and praises the power of the guitar as the ultimate conduit to the secrets of the divine South American destiny.

The German radio broadcaster Deutschlandfunk Kultur, German Music Council, and GENUIN once again jointly present the debut CD of Aurel Dawidiuk, B‑A-C‑H ​“Hommage à …”. Exploring the theme of B‑A-C‑H in his organ debut, the major organ works assembled here span three centuries and include music by Johann Sebastian Bach himself, Johann Krebs, Franz Liszt, Zsigmond Szathmáry, and Max Reger – a rich diversity of music covering a wide range of styles.

Recording this program with these top pieces of these top composers was like climbing the Mount Everest for me. To quote Christian Thielemann: ​‘The view is spectacular — but the air at the top is thin.’ I am glad to have experienced (survived) this journey with so many impressive and touching moments on the road.”

This November Jean-Yves Thibaudet​’s Debussy album was re-released in the UK in limited edition Vinyl and CD. The striking cover artwork was designed by the late Vivienne Westwood shortly before her passing in December 2022. In the years since they were first heard as part of the 1996 Decca release Debussy: Complete Works for Piano, Thibaudet’s recordings continue to rank among the most well-regarded interpretations of the Préludes.
