Eight HP & Polyarts artists at Verbier Festival 2023

Nicolas Altstaedt participates in several chamber music concerts at the Verbier Festival. On 17 July, he performs alongside Daniel Hope, Lawrence Power, and Julien Quentin. The program for this concert will include pieces by Franz Schmidt, Max Bruch, and Friedrich Gernsheim. He will also appear in another chamber music project on 20 July alongside Alexander Malofeev, Alexander Sitkovetsky, Alissa Margulis, and Amihai Grosz. They perform Antonín Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No.1. Altstaedt is also a part of the 30th Anniversary Gala concert, where he performs Bach’s Goldberg Variations, transcribed by Dmitry Sitkovetsky. His last performance of the festival features Quatuor Ébène with Franz Schubert’s String Quintet in C major on 29 July.
Martin Fröst performs Anna Clyne’s Clarinet Concerto, Weathered, with Verbier Festival Orchestra and Gábor Takács-Nagy on 18 July as well as a chamber music concert with Lucas Debargue and Sébastien Dubé, featuring the material from his Sony Classic album Night Passages on 21 July.
The 30th Anniversary Gala concert will be Martin Fröst’s last performance of this year’s festival. The programme includes Johann Sebastian Bach’s Goldberg Variations, transcribed by Dmitry Sitkovetsky, and Camille Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals, transcribed by Marc-André Herzog.
Klaus Mäkelä performs at the festival as conductor and chamber musician. On 19 July, he joins Yuja Wang, Daniel Lozakovich and Antoine Tamestit, to perform Rachmaninoff’s Cello Sonata in G minor and Trio élégiatique No.1 followed by Brahms’ Piano Quarter No.2 in A major for a ‘Rencontre Inédite’ – a trademark of the Verbier Festival. Klaus Mäkelä then conducts the Verbier Festival Orchestra on 23 July when he presents a programme of Rachmaninov’s Piano Concerto No.2 with Mikhail Pletnev, and Strauss Alpine Symphony.
On 24 July he celebrates among others the Verbier Festival’s 30th anniversary and closes his season in Verbier on 25 July together with Yuja Wang and Renaud Capuçon performing Schubert’s Trio for Piano and Strings in B flat major.
Mari Samuelsen returns to Verbier Festival for two concerts as part of the UNLTD series. On 22 July, Mari brings Max Richter’s Recomposed to La Chaux alongside Verbier Academy String Players. This is followed by an appearance on the Concert Club stage, with a meditative and energising programme blending classics with contemporary composers at Taratata on 26 July, accompanied by Academy soloists and pianist Pedja Mužijević. Mari also features in the Innovations in Concert Curation talk on 16 July, shining a light on how she designs her programmes.
Kent Nagano returns to Verbier Festival this year on 21 July to conduct Verbier Festival Chamber Orchestra with a programme comprising of Barber’s Adagio for Strings, Copland’s Appalachian Spring and Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major with Leonidas Kavakos.
Gautier Capuçon returns to Verbier for a sold-out recital with pianist Yuja Wang on 23 July. The programme will include Britten’s Cello Sonata, dedicated to Mstislav Rostropovich, alongside Polonaise Brilliante by Chopin, and Grieg’s Cello Sonata. Capuçon will also be appearing in the special anniversary gala for the festival’s 30th edition on 24 July.
Christopher Ventris brings his Tambour’ Major to Verbier Festival this summer in a semi-staged performance of Berg’s Wozzeck on 27 July with Verbier Festival Orchestra, conducted by Lahav Shani. The concert will be live broadcast on Medici TV and via radio on Espace 2.
Lisa Batiashvili returns to Verbier Festival on 24 July and joins colleagues in a performance of the Dmitry Sitkovetsky transcription of Bach’s Goldberg Variations in the 30th Anniversary Gala concert. On 26 July she will also perform Ernest Chausson’s Concerto for Violin, Piano and String Quartet in D alongside Lucas Debargue and Quatour Ebene.
