This week Víkingur Ólafsson makes his debut with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester as part of the Elbphilharmonie’s Festival ‘Into Iceland’.
On 10 and 11 February, under the baton of Esa-Pekka Salonen, Víkingur gives the world premiere of Haukur Tómasson’s Piano Concerto, commissioned by NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchester and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Also on 11 February he performs an early evening concert of chamber music by Bach, Bjarnason, Nordal and Jónsdóttir with Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir.
In May, Víkingur will return to Elbphilharmonie to perform a solo recital featuring Philip Glass’ Piano Etudes. These works feature on Víkingur’s debut Deutsche Grammophon album released on 27 January to coincide with the composer’s 80th birthday. The album has reached no.1 on Amazon France and Germany.
