Anna Gillingham and Maren Favela head off to Singapore this week as Frasquita and Mercédès respectively in concert performances of Bizet’s Carmen with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra. Conducted by Music Director Lan Shui, concerts take place on 22 and 23 April.
Following on from the success of the Fidelio, these performances mark Lan Shui’s second operatic project with the Singapore Symphony in recent seasons. He returns to the opera pit for Zhou Long’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Madame White Snake in Boston later this year.
British soprano Anna Gillingham made her debut at Theater Basel this season as Pamina (Die Zauberflöte) under Christoph Altstaedt. She returns to Florence later this summer for her debut as Miss Wordsworth (Albert Herring) at Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, having made her professional operatic debut there last season as the Governess in Britten’s The Turn of the Screw.
Mezzo-soprano Maren Favela has appeared this season at Opéra national de Paris in Schoenberg’s Moses und Aron under Philippe Jordan and at Oper Frankfurt as Giannetta in Fioravanti’s Le Cantatrici Villane. Looking ahead she will join the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra and Edo de Waart as Cherubino (Le nozze di Figaro) next season.
