Ain Anger debuts at Washington National Opera as Wagner’s Daland
2/3/2015
Estonian bass Ain Anger marks his debut at Washington National Opera as Daland in Wagner’s Der fliegende Holländer — the same role as his acclaimed debut at Teatro alla Scala. Produced by Stephen Lawless, the performances run from 7 to 21 March.
Considered as one of today’s great Wagnerian basses, Anger is in demand by the major theatres of the world and is a favourite of many of today’s top conductors. He made his Bayreuth Festival debut as Fafner in both Das Rheingold and Siegfried under Christian Thielemann, sang Hunding (Die Walküre) in new Ring Cycles at Munich’s Bayerische Staatsoper under Kent Nagano, at Wiener Staatsoper under Franz Welser-Möst and in Frankfurt under Sebastian Weigle. Last summer he appeared at the BBC Proms as Landgraf (Tannhäuser) with Deutsche Oper Berlin under Donald Runnicles.
Anger remains in the US after his Washington debut and returns to Houston Grand Opera as Hunding (Die Walküre) under Patrick Summers, followed by concert performances as Peneios (Daphne) with The Cleveland Orchestra at New York’s Lincoln Center under Franz Welser-Möst.
