Shakespeare’s Globe makes its debut in China
16/9/2014
This autumn, Shakespeare’s Globe tours to China for the first time, bringing its critically acclaimed A Midsummer Night’s Dream to the Chinese audience and celebrating the 450th anniversary of the playwright’s birth.
To capture the atmosphere of the Globe Theatre in London, this touring version replicates the theatre’s unique staging with the iconic pillars, balcony and period detailing at each Chinese venue, bringing the authentic 17th century theatre scene to life.
The tour kicks off at the Shanghai Oriental Art Center with three sold-out performances from 19 September, before moving on to Hangzhou, Guangzhou, Taipei and Kaohsiung, and concluding in Beijing at the National Centre for the Performing Arts in late November. This tour also extends to Russia and South East Asia.
Commenting on the company’s debut in the region, the Artistic Director Dominic Dromgoole said: “I think the works of Shakespeare are quite young in China; people are still discovering his stories and seeing his plays as fresh, but there is so much enthusiasm and so much passion for Shakespeare, we feel that it will be great for us to a be part of that conversation”.
HarrisonParrott is delighted to work with Shakespeare’s Globe and major venues in China to realise this ground-breaking project.
