17/2/2014
BBC Cardiff Singer of the World Jamie Barton is up for another award as she is nominated for Young Singer of the Year in the 2014 International Opera Awards.
Now in their second year, the Awards were launched by Opera magazine to promote excellence in opera and support emerging talent, and have quickly established themselves as a fixture in the industry calendar.
Further nominations featuring HarrisonParrott artists include two Britten operas recognised in the Anniversary Productions category: Gloriana, presented at the Royal Opera House in June 2013, starring Susan Bullock as Elizabeth I and Patricia Bardon as Lady Essex; and the Aldeburgh Festival’s historic outdoor production of Peter Grimes, which was conducted by Steuart Bedford.
Nominations for Complete Opera CD of the year include Donizetti’s Belisario on Opera Rara, featuring a stand-out performance by Russell Thomas as Alamiro. Also nominated are Britten’s The Rape of Lucretia, conducted by Oliver Knussen, on the Erato label, and Benjamin’s Written on Skin, on Nimbus, with Barbara Hannigan in the role of Agnes. Both recordings have already been honoured with a number of international accolades since their release.
Nominations were chosen by a panel of industry experts including Sir Peter Jonas, Elaine Padmore and critics Hugh Canning and Fiona Maddocks. Winners will be announced at a ceremony in London on 7 April.
