Video work by Sayaka Shoji features in contemporary art exhibition in France
2/2/2014
One of the most creative young violinists today, Sayaka Shoji has turned her interest in the visual arts into a project based on Synesthesia. The project illustrates how Sayaka’s inward impressions when playing the violin are transformed into different types of expression through painting and film. ‘Synesthesia’ includes a video cycle conceived and directed by Sayaka with video artist Pascal Frament. Featuring works by Shostakovich, the films describe Sayaka’s unconscious imagination in relation to music. The video is currently being shown in a contemporary art exhibition in Bourg en Bresse, France, alongside works by artists such as Sophie Calle, Jan Fabre, Mounir Fatmi, Anne Ferrer, Shigeko Hirakawa, Yayoi Kusama, Claude Lévêque, Robert Longo and Tony Morgan. The exhibition runs until 23 February.
Through the project, Sayaka also aims to enhance communication between artists from different disciplines. She has recently collaborated with actress Mayumi Wakamura to create music for Jean Cocteau’s film La Voix humaine and worked with choreographer and dancer Elodie Sicard on Max Reger’s Chaconne for solo violin.
