Eivind Gullberg Jensen leads Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra on 2 November in the Norwegian premiere of Korngold’s introspective late romantic work, Die Tote Stadt. Gullberg Jensen has been the General and Artistic Director of Bergen National Opera since 2021, and the company have just extended his tenure until at least the end of 2025. Die Tote Stadt marks the season opening of the company, and is presented in a new production by visionary director Calixto Bieito. Korngold wrote the opera when he was just 23, and went on to become one of Hollywood’s foremost film composers. This early work nonetheless contains some of his most timeless music, including the soaring and romantic Marietta’s Lied.
