“The violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja is not to be outdone, ensuring not only the very virtuosic and colourful instrumental part but also that of the soprano’s partner, juggling between the two domains with the greatest ease.” — Forum Opéra, Julian Lembke, July 2024
Aix-en-Provence is currently hosting Songs and Fragments by Barrie Kosky, a new production juxtaposing Kafka Fragments by Kurtág and 8 Songs for a Mad King by Peter Maxwell Davies. In the 100th year since Kafka’s death, Barrie Kosky celebrates a personal encounter with the writer, showcasing two lost souls — a man (8 Songs of a Mad King) and woman (Kafka Fragmente), on the edge of their emotional capabilities. In Kafka Fragmente, the duet of Anna Prohaska and Patricia Kopatchinskaja explores boundless creative freedom within the utmost minimalism of form. The work pushes the limits of expression to the extreme, venturing into realms previously unknown.
