Pierre-Laurent Aimard Performs Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony
31/5/2024
Pierre-Laurent Aimard joins Myung-Whun Chung, Cynthia Millar and Staatskapelle Dresden for three performances of Messiaen’s Turangalîla-Symphonie at the Semperoper Dresden on 9, 10 and 11 June.
The Guardian has praised Aimard as“one of the best Messiaen interpreters around” as he lends his expertise to the multitude of styles, rhythms, and expressive gestures in this symphonic masterpiece from 1949. Described by the composer as a hymn to “superhuman, overflowing, blinding and boundless joy”, the work takes the form of an orchestral love song over which soars an astonishingly virtuoso piano part coupled with the otherworldly electro-acoustic sounds of the ondes Martenot.
A free introductory talk is set to be held in the Semper Opera House 45 minutes before curtain-up.
