Berliner Philharmoniker Late Night Concert with Jörg Widmann and Sarah Aristidou
23/2/2024
As part of Jörg Widmann’s residency with Berliner Philharmoniker, Sarah Aristidou joins him in a Late-Night concert entitled ‘The Expressive Worlds of Clarinet and Vocals’ at Berlin Philharmonie on 2 March, featuring works by Widmann and Schubert.
At the beginning of the programme, Widmann performs his Drei Schattentänze, which presents the great sound richness of a solo clarinet. Then, Sarah Aristidou and Annika Treutler join forces with Jörg Widmann for Schubert’s Hirt auf dem Felsen, representing a partly contemplative and virtuoso dialogue between clarinet and soprano.
Sarah Aristidou, recent winner of Preis der Deutschenschallplattenkritik for her second album Enigma, also performs Labyrinth V which Jörg Widmann dedicated to her. The piece for coloratura soprano uses different vocal techniques that range through whispered, murmured, fragmented, sustained, vibrating tones, maniacal laughter turning to sobs, musing sighs, gurgles, clicks, slaps and obsessive vocalisations.
The programme concludes with Widmann’s Freie Stücke for Ensemble, performed by orchestra members of Berliner Philharmoniker under his baton. The piece, which was Widmann’s first composition for ensemble, consists of ten pieces, each of which focuses on a tonal phenomenon such as pulse, fluctuating ground, noise and monophony.
