Deepa Johnny debuts at Opéra de Rouen Normandie as Carmen
15/9/2023
In a recreation of the original 1875 Opéra Comique setting of Bizet’s Carmen, Romain Gilbert directs Deepa Johnny in the title role marking her first performances as the eponymous heroine as well as her debut at Opéra de Rouen Normandie. Conducted by Music Director Ben Glassberg, this highly-anticipated special event premieres on 22 September, with further performances on 24, 26, 28, 30 September and 3 October.
Currently part of the young artist programme at Los Angeles Opera, Deepa Johnny was first heard in Europe earlier this year as part of the inaugural cast of Ted Huffman and Philip Venables’ The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions, presented in co-production by Manchester International Festival, Festival d’Aix-en-Provence and Bregenzer Festspiele. Elsewhere in the season, she debuts with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France and Leonardo García Alarcón in Mozart’s Mass and sings Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro at Portland Opera.
