Star saxophonist Jess Gillam​’s Berlin debut is with Grammy award-winning conductor Giancarlo Guerrero at the Philharmonie on 11 June. They are performing the world premiere of Stravaganza, a new concerto for the saxophone by Karl Jenkins, together with Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin. The composer said of the piece that ​“a certain eccentricity or quirkiness pervades throughout.” It was inspired by the story of Jess Gillam discovering the saxophone for the first time at a carnival.
