Patricia Kopatchinskaja tours ‘Maria Mater Meretrix’ with Ensemble Resonanz
28/3/2023
Patricia Kopatchinskaja tours with Ensemble Resonanz and Austrian-English soprano Anna Prohaska this April in a thought-provoking programme exploring the history of classical music and its depiction of women.
The first stop is the Barbican Centre (16 April), where Patricia performs the final concert of her Artist Spotlight series at the London venue. The tour then heads to deSingel, Antwerp, on 20 April before concluding in Vienna at Wiener Konzerthaus on 22 April.
The programme brings together an unusual selection of short pieces with one thing in common – they are inspired by the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. ‘Maria Mater Meretrix’ presents the image of women — saints and whores — throughout the centuries in a musical mosaic and is created (by Patricia and Anna) all around the figure of Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene. The music is from Hildegard von Bingen to Kurtag and Lili Boulanger to Frank Martin.
