Paul Appleby makes a welcome return to Dutch National Opera as Tom Rakewell in Simon McBurney’s lauded production of The Rake’s Progress, which premiered at the 2017 Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, marking Paul’s Festival debut. Conducted by Ivor Bolton, the run opens on 1 February.
Following his debut in Amsterdam last season as Belmonte (Die Entführung aus dem Serail), Paul Appleby has retained a significant presence in Europe with recent highlights including Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict in concert at Opéra national de Paris under Philippe Jordan, and Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius with Bamberger Symphoniker and David Zinman. At home in the US, Paul recently created the role of Joe Cannon in the world premiere of John Adams’ Girls of the Golden West at San Francisco Opera, and looks ahead to concert performances as Candide at Carnegie Hall with Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and Schubert’s Mass No.6 with the Chicago Symphony and Riccardo Muti.
