Gil Shaham gives the UK premiere of Bright Sheng’s Violin Concerto Let Fly, with the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo. The 9 May concert also features Oramo conducting Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra.
Sheng’s concerto, a BBC co-commission, was written for Shaham who also gave the world premiere with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under Leonard Slatkin in October 2013, and the Asian premiere with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra under Lan Shui in January 2014.
Shaham is currently working on a major recording project on the Canary Classics label, featuring Violin Concertos of the 1930s. The first release has been met with considerable acclaim, with Gramophone magazine writing: “This should be considered one of the finest versions [of Britten’s Violin Concerto] currently available.”
