FREYA WALEY-COHEN’S NEW WORK PREMIERES AT ARCHIPELAGO CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL
30/8/2024
A new work by Freya Waley-Cohen receives its world premiere on 6 September at Archipelago Chamber Music Festival on San Juan Island, Washington, USA. Entitled Pisces, the work for septet was commissioned by Archipelago Collective in celebration of the Festival’s 10th anniversary. Waley-Cohen’s piano music also features at the festival in a recital by George Fu on 7 September.
Discussing her inspiration for Pisces, Waley-Cohen comments:
“It’s so meaningful to return to writing for Sophie Baird-Daniel and this ensemble of world class musicians. I first wrote for Sophie when we were fellows at Tanglewood together, and have since written her a solo work. I’m looking forward to deepening this musical friendship through writing for her and the ensemble, treating the seven players of the septet as equal musical voices… It’s a piece about my anticipation and imagination of the San Juan archipelago, structured in cycles, of imagined moons and months and years and tides.”
