September's New Album Releases 2024
Jörg Widmann: Piano Music released on MDG. Jörg Widmann writes music that is both sophisticated and deeply moving. The highly talented and versatile virtuoso, Yubo Zhou, delves deep into Widmann’s world of sound with these four stirring piano cycles, revealing a whole cosmos of allusions and associations. Featuring Zirkustanze (Circus Dances), Elf Humoresken, and Intermezzi, a tribute to his love for Brahms.
Taking its title, Nessun Dorma, from the greatest tenor hit of them all, Pene Pati’s second album balances favourite numbers with operatic rarities – two of them in world premiere recordings. In addition to Puccini, the Italian composers are Verdi, Donizetti, Mascagni and Mercadante, while the French school is represented by Berlioz, Meyerbeer, Gounod, Massenet, Halévy and Guiraud. Joining the Samoan tenor on the album are his soprano wife, Amina Edris, his tenor brother Amitai Pati, conductor Emmanuel Villaume, the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine and Choeur de l’Opéra National de Bordeaux.
Kristiina Poska and Flanders Symphony Orchestra releases second volume of Beethoven’s complete symphonies cycle on Fuga Liberia. Following the first volume release in 2021 featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No.1 and No.7, the second volume brings together Beethoven’s Symphony No.2 and No.3. Although Symphony No.2 follows the classical trajectory of Symphony No.1, it marks a transition from his earlier works to a more assertive and individual style. You can hear his pride and personal struggle against his encroaching deafness. Beethoven’s Symphony No.3, Eroica, represents a monumental shift in the symphonic genre and breaks with conventional norms. It revolutionizes symphonic composition by expanding its scope, duration and expressive possibilities. In doing so, Beethoven laid the foundations for the Romantic period in music.
“It is such a privilege and adventure to record all of them, as it gives is the opportunity to explore the depth of Beethoven’s language from close by, to follow his many transformations throughout his life and to witness some of the greatest pieces of music ever written,” says Kristiina Poska.
The debut album from the prodigious young pianist-composer Tsotne Zedginidze has been released on 13 September on Deutsche Grammophon. The Verbier Debut Recital 2022 showcases one of Zedginidze’s first forays onto a major world stage, and features an exploration of 20th century piano works by Debussy, Schönberg, and Bartók. The programme is brought right up to the present day by the inclusion of two of Zedginidze’s own piano compositions, Doloreum (Tristesse), and Spring. This recital marked the beginning of a fruitful relationship between the Verbier Festival and Zedginidze, who returned for recitals in 2023 and 2024. He will also appear with the Festival for a series of solo and ensemble recitals at the Festival’s guest residence in Schloss Elmau from 25 — 29 November.
The album is available for streaming on all major platforms, and an exclusive commentary track can also be found on Apple Music.
