ALBUM RELEASE: Kristiina Poska and Flanders Symphony Orchestra releases second volume of Beethoven cycle
27/9/2024
Together with chief conductor Kristiina Poska, Flanders Symphony Orchestra is releasing the complete symphonies of Beethoven for the label Fuga Libera. For some time now, the symphonies of this great master have been a point of reference for the orchestra, a shining beacon at the heart of the symphonic literature.
“The Beethoven cycle is the foundation of the artistic trajectory that Symfonieorkest Vlaanderen has been following in recent years. With every symphony Kristiina Poska succeeds in shining a new light on Beethoven and bringing out the best in our musicians. The recordings of the 2nd and 3rd Symphonies are typical of Poska and her orchestra: transparent in sound, thoughtful, attentive to every detail and performed with tremendous spirit,” says Jos Roeden, Intendant of Flanders Symphony Orchestra.
The second volume in this series brings together Beethoven’s Symphonies No. 2 and No.3. Although Beethoven’s Symphony No.2 follows the classical trajectory of his Symphony No.1, it marks a transition from his earlier works to a more assertive and individual style. You can hear his pride and personal struggle against his encroaching deafness.
Beethoven’s Symphony No.3, Eroica, represents a monumental shift in the symphonic genre and breaks with conventional norms. It revolutionizes symphonic composition by expanding its scope, duration and expressive possibilities. In doing so, Beethoven laid the foundations for the Romantic period in music.
“I am very happy to present this next step of our complete recordings of the Beethoven Symphonies! Symphonies nos. 2 and 3 are very contrasting indeed, but therefore I think they make a great match. It is such a privilege and adventure to record all of them, as it gives the opportunity to explore the depth of Beethoven’s language from close by, to follow his many transformations throughout his life and to witness some of the greatest pieces of music ever written,” says Kristiina Poska.
The album is available worldwide on all streaming platforms now and released on CD on 10 October.
