Leila Josefowicz Premieres New Work by Charlotte Bray
13/9/2024
Mriya, a new work by Charlotte Bray, premieres on 21 September with Leila Josefowicz and John Novacek. Commissioned by Wigmore Hall, the 16-minute piece for violin and piano pays tribute to the people of Ukraine. Describing her inspiration, Bray comments:
“Mriya translates from the Ukrainian language as dream, vision, ambition and vow. Inspired by the immense courage, conviction and integrity of President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and a resilient Ukrainian people, a persistent struggle, between the dream of freedom, driven by hope and resolve, and the darkness of war, runs through the music.”
Sunflowers, an artwork by Caroline Burraway which reflects on similar themes, will be exhibited at the hall to coincide with the premiere. Burraway and Bray are frequent artistic partners who recently collaborated on the critically acclaimed Ungrievable Lives.
