Four HarrisonParrott artists attend the Aldeburgh Festival 2024
Alban Gerhardt is one of the Aldeburgh festival’s featured musicians this year, with several concerts throughout the festival. Works performed include Elgar’s Cello Concerto with London Philharmonic Orchestra, two works by Thomas Larcher alongside Claire Booth (soprano) Jospeh Havlat (piano) and Charlotte Sulste-Bridoux (violin), Britten’s Cello Sonata with Steven Osborne, Suites by Bach and Britten, finishing off with Unsuk Chin’s Cello Concerto with BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra.
Matilda Lloyd performs the world premiere of a new trumpet concerto by Robin Haigh called LUCK at the Aldeburgh Festival at Snape Maltings Concert Hall on 15 June, with Britten’s Sinfonia led by Jessica Cottis.
This landmark event recreates the first ever Aldeburgh Festival opening night in June 1948 by keeping the programme almost the same: Purcell’s Chaconny, one of Britten’s major musical influences, and Handel’s Organ Concerto were paired with two new works: God’s Grandeur by Martin Shaw and Britten’s cantata Saint Nicolas. Shaw’s work is being replaced by Haigh’s trumpet concerto, written for Matilda Lloyd and co-commissioned by Ulster Orchestra. She joins Jessica Cottis and Robin Haigh for a pre-performance talk.
On 17 June, Sofi Jeannin conducts BBC Singers and Castalian String Quartet, performing Judith Weir’s beautiful oratorio charting the changing seasons of the year, which is perfectly complemented by Haydn’s Sunrise Quartet and Messiaen’s Cinq rechants.
Roderick Cox makes his Aldeburgh Festival debut on 22 June and conducts Royal Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra in a programme featuring Shostakovich’s Symphony No.10, which finds triumph beyond tragedy, and the first UK performance of Unsuk Chin’s Alaraph, inspired by “heartbeat stars” and the traditional music of Korea.
