Foundation workshop: in partnership with LMP Action C.I.C

On 11 April 2023, the HarrisonParrott Foundation volunteers had the pleasure of running a workshop in partnership with LMP Action C.I.C with a group of young students at Latymer Upper School.

“There is a role for everybody in the music industry.”

The main goal of this workshop was to provide the students with an inspiring springboard into the creative industries, showcasing the plurality of possible career pathways available to reach the music industry more specifically.

HP Foundation Manager Lissy Kelleher-Clarke started by presenting the music industry as a whole ecosystem, focusing not only on professional musicians, teachers and music venues, but also on the many roles that exist underneath and alongside them: accountants, lawyers, marketers and engineers to name a few.

“I didn’t start at HarrisonParrott — I started working as a publishing assistant and a content assistant at the Royal Opera House. I got where I am today because I invested a lot of time and energy into my hobby. I enjoyed singing.”

Four of the HP Foundation volunteers – Theodor Küng, Alice Jones, Katya Walker-Arnott and Lucie Rivet – happily shared their stories and insights with the group. Their various skills and experiences show that there is not just one way to insert yourself within the field.

“I decided to sit down and think about all of the things I could put on my resume – many of those skills were not directly related to music, but I could still use them in the field to be creative and effective.”

During that workshop, the students were presented with a card game where they had to think about the best ways to insert and promote an artist, making sure to highlight the artist’s profile, their needs and what a music agency like HarrisonParrott had to consider.

“I’ve been working in the arts industry for nearly twelve years now, having changed course a few times, trying out a few different things alongside full-time jobs. Don’t be afraid to think that you can move laterally in this industry!”

Ultimately, what is at the root of the music industry – and what the HP Foundation stands for – is a diverse network of people who share the same passion for music.

Music is an art resonating across many fields that we encounter every day, regardless of who we are, where we come from and what we are familiar with. It was a pleasure to engage young people in this conversation, letting them share their beliefs and stories with us and encouraging them to include their interests in their professional aspirations.

“What happens is that you find your tribe, you find the people who kind of go in the same direction as you. If you are thinking that you have to be lead guitarist of the group, that’s not necessarily true. Maybe you’re the person who records the group’s first EP.”
