2/12/2020
Watch Hannu Lintu conduct London Philharmonic Orchestra in ‘The Midnight Sun’ featuring Jean Sibelius’ Symphony No.5 inspired by a flight of swans in the sunset. It’s free to watch for 7 days on Marquee TV.
When Jean Sibelius saw a flight of swans in the sunset, he knew that he had the ending of his Symphony No.5. Premiered in 1915, and conducted tonight by Sibelius’ fellow Finn Hannu Lintu, it’s the culmination of a journey that begins in 2015 with the late, great Polish master Krzysztof Penderecki’s Sinfonietta for Strings. The adventure extends back to 1815, with Schubert’s playful Symphony No.3, before returning to 2015 in Finland, as Lotta Wennäkoski conjures textures and colours like you’ve never imagined.
