Pablo Heras-Casado returns to Teatro Real de Madrid to lead Robert Carsen’s production of Wagner’s Die Walküre. Running from 12 to 28 February, the Oper Köln production sets the action in modern times, presenting a world of factions at war, with stage designs by Patrick Kinmonth and lighting designs from Manfred Voss. Pablo conducts a star-studded double cast, including Christopher Ventris as Siegmund and Ain Anger as Hunding, amongst others.
Teatro Real’s Principal Guest Conductor, Heras-Casado began Wagner’s famous tetralogy last season, leading Das Rheingold in a celebrated production:
“One of the points of interest of these performances was undoubtedly the presence of Pablo Heras-Casado at the head of the musical direction … the Nibelheim scene and the final one were brilliant. It has been 12 years since I first saw him conducting opera (Le nozze di Figaro in Bordeaux), and he is definitely in an excellent moment. Under his baton was the Teatro Real orchestra which proved once again that it’s the best pit orchestra in Spain. I look forward to the future installments of the Ring.” (Seen and Heard International)
The cycle continues throughout the next two seasons, with Siegfried and Götterdämmerung coming to stage in 2021 and 2022, respectively.
