29/3/2019
Susan Bullock, Marie McLaughlin and Alex Otterburn join forces in the world premiere of Iain Bell’s Jack the Ripper: The Women of Whitechapel at English National Opera on 30 March. Daniel Kramer stages this new work and ENO Music Director Martyn Brabbins conducts.
Iain Bell‘s new opera, with a libretto by Emma Jenkins, tells the stories of the women who fell victim to the infamous serial killer and the effect of the shocking murders on the working-class Whitechapel communities of the time.
Susan Bullock and Marie McLaughlin make highly anticipated returns to the ENO stage as Liz Stride and Annie Chapman. Both have long and celebrated associations with the company, Marie making her debut as the Page in Gounod’s Romeo and Juliet in 1981 and Susan as Pamina in 1986. They are joined by Harewood Artist Alex Otterburn who makes his mainstage ENO debut in the role of Squibby and returns next season as Pluto in Orpheus in the Underworld and Morales in Carmen.
