Hannu Lintu and Susanna Mälkki conduct their respective orchestras at this year’s Helsinki Festival.
On 24 August Lintu conducts the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra in Mahler’s epic Symphony No.8; the performance, which takes place at the Helsinki Music Centre, features an all-star line-up of Finnish opera singers including Helena Juntunen, Lilli Paasikivi and Tommi Hakala. On 30 August, Mälkki takes to the same stage with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra for the Finnish premiere of leading Finnish choreographer Tero Saarinen’s reimagining of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Cello Concerto “Pas de Trois”. J.S. Bach/Webern’s Ricercar and Strauss’ An Alpine Symphony are the opening and concluding works to the programme, repeated on 31 August.
