The Singapore Symphony Orchestra makes its BBC Proms debut
29/8/2014
On 2 September the Singapore Symphony Orchestra makes its BBC Proms debut under the baton of their Music Director Lan Shui.
The concert opens with the overture to Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila and closes with Rachmaninov’s Symphony No.2. The programme also features the European premiere of Pulitzer Prize-winning Chinese composer Zhou Long’s Piano Concerto, Postures, with Andreas Haefliger as soloist.
The SSO previously performed works by Zhou Long in London when they made their Royal Festival Hall debut in 2010 as part of the orchestra’s six-city European Tour. That concert marked the orchestra’s return to the UK after 20 years and featured Stephen Hough as soloist in their performance of Mendelssohn’s Piano Concerto No.1. The tour garnered rave reviews from The Times and Süddeutsche Zeitung and also featured a sold-out performance at the Berlin Philharmonie.
