The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra triumphs in Athens and Azmir
5/7/2010
On Friday, as a stadium in Port Elizabeth, South Africa resounded to the ecstatic cheers of Dutch football supporters dressed in their national colour, thousands of miles away a room full of similarly-clad musicians joined in the delighted celebrations. A couple of hours later, the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra conducted by Daniele Gatti, raised the roof in their own style, with a passionate performance of Wagner’s Siegfried Idylland Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, at the Izmir International Festival. Two days previously they had given a similarly rousing performance in the dramatic and stunning setting of the Herod Atticus Odeon, in the shadow of the Acropolis, as part of the Hellenic Festival. With the orchestra now enjoying their summer holiday, HarrisonParrott looks forward to its next collaboration, when they will give two concerts at the Edinburgh International Festival.
